Although not officially America’s first national park, Yosemite is widely considered to be the birthplace of the national park idea and the pioneering of wilderness conservation in general. Yosemite National Park was established in 1890 and today the park encompasses almost 1,200 square miles in the Sierra Nevada mountains, ranging in elevation from approximately 2,000 to 13,000 feet. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 for its distinctive landscape features, diverse ecosystems and exceptional natural beauty. Yosemite attracts approximately 4 million visitors annually.
